Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has commences the refurbishment of a section of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at a cost of Sh963 million.
The refurbishment is expected to take a year to complete with travelers asked to arrive at JKIA at least four hours before their scheduled departure time to avoid any inconvenience.
The upgrading of the JKIA Terminal 1B and 1C will see the departure halls remodeled to enhance experiences in check-in, security scanning, retail operations and passenger lounge.
“It will also increase passenger flow and increase efficiency due to centralisation of security screening procedures and the reallocation of available floor spaces to international departure gates,” KAA statement issued on Wednesday read.
Planes that had been using Terminals 1B and 1C, which will be affected by the planned renovations, will now have to use Terminals 1A and 2 for the time being.

“The remodeling project is an integral part of the ongoing JKIA Customer Service Improvement Plan (CSIP) which was formulated from feedback from our stakeholders and customers,” said Alex Gitari, KAA MD.
Gitari said the refurbishment is part of efforts by the Authority to place JKIA ahead of other aviation hubs in the region.
“The refurbishment and facelift of the T1B and 1C aims to align the passenger experience in these terminals to match what is offered at T1A,” Gitari added.
