Safaricom has won three major accolades recognising its leadership in gender inclusion, financial technology and e-commerce boosting its reputation as the regional tech giant.

At the prestigious Usawa Awards, the Safaricom Board of Directors was feted for championing gender diversity for appointing five women to its Board in 2024.

The award hosted by the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) recognised strides the telco has made in embedding gender equity at the highest level of governance.

“Diversity and inclusion for us are important to building a business that scales with purpose,” said Safaricom CEO Dr Peter Ndegwa.

He added: “We are proud of the progress we have made and remain committed to nurturing leadership that represents all voices.”

In a nod to Safaricom’s growing fintech portfolio, its Tunza Simu mobile phone insurance product, developed by the M-PESA Financial Services Insurance Squad, was named 2025 InsurTech of the Year at the African Insurance Awards.

The win recognises the innovative and user-friendly nature of Tunza Simu, which has enabled customers to easily insure their mobile devices through M-PESA.

“These recognitions serve as a strong reminder of our team's commitment to impactful innovation.

Safaricom’s online marketplace Masoko also scooped the Gold Award for Best Mobile Devices and Accessories E-Commerce Store at the 7th Kenya E-Commerce Awards.

The award highlights Masoko’s success in delivering a secure and reliable shopping experience custom made to meet the needs of the digitally savvy consumers in Kenya.

The awards come as Safaricom sharpens its long-term ambition to become Africa’s most purpose-led technology company by 2030.

The awards stage Safaricom’s commitment to inclusive leadership, accessible insurance solutions and a robust e-commerce platform to align its innovations to real-life needs.
