US President Donald Trump on Wednesday went ahead with his threat to impose what he termed as reciprocal tariffs against Kenya and 184 other countries across all the continents.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that the reciprocal tariffs take effect immediately as the listed countries figure out how to respond to the sudden trade actions.
President Trump also announced a baseline tariff his administration is imposing on various countries in the most sweeping tariff shocker America has ever implemented in its history.
The reciprocal tariffs by the world’s most powerful leader were revealed during what he termed ‘Liberation Day’ as he pushes forward with his Make America Great Again policy.
The new Trump administration also indicated that any country that was excluded from the long list will receive a baseline 10 per cent tariff on any products it is exporting to the US.

To Trump government accused the listed countries of charging US products tariffs including trade barriers and currency manipulation, even as it failed to provide evidence to back this.
He has been using tariffs to arm-twist countries for favorable taxes on US products even as some countries, including neighbouring Canada, have reacted with their own tariff actions.
Within three months of assuming office, Trump imposed:
10 per cent tariff on Chinese imports
25 per cent tariff on all products from Canada and Mexico
25 per cent tariff on all auto imports
25 per cent tariff on steel and aluminum imports
Kenya Government, headed by President William Ruto, is yet to formally respond to the Trump tariff amid concerns over the huge impact the move will have on Kenya’s exports.
In 2023, Kenya exported a total of $838 million in goods to the US, with key export products including coffee, vaccines, non-knit men's suits, blood, antisera, toxins, and cultures.
The total exports by Kenya to the United States of America have significantly increased at an annual rate of 5.38 per cent from 2018, when Kenya exported products worth $645 million.
