A city court has acquitted billionaire businessman Humphrey Kariuki of the Sh7.4 million tax evasion charges. 

This is after the Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji failed to avail witnesses prompting Magistrate Kennedy Cheruiyot to exonerate Kariuki based on Section 202 of the Constitution. 

The reclusive billionaire was plunged into the limelight in February last year after Directorate of Criminal Investigations sleuths raided his Africa Spirits Limited plant in Thika over alleged tax fraud. 

DCI detectives the launched a manhunt for Kariuki for days before the businessman presented himself in court and denied the tax fraud charges and was freed on a Sh11 million cash bail.

The billionaire mogul is said to own The Hub mall in Karen, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari club in Nanyuki, Dalbit Petroleum among other high-grossing businesses.

Earlier on December 3, tax evasion charges facing his co-accused, businessman Stuart Gerald were also withdrawn. 

 Gerald, a former director at WOW beverages who faced Sh17 billion tax evasion charges, was exonerated by Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi following withdrawal of charges by the DPP.
