In a significant move within the tech industry, OPPO has inked a global cooperation agreement with Ericsson, a collaboration that spans patent cross-licensing, technical cooperation, and market expansion.

This strategic partnership includes a global cross-license for standard-essential patents (SEPs) related to cellular communication technologies, notably 5G.

“We are pleased to announce that we have reached a global cooperation agreement with Ericsson," Feng Ying, OPPO's Chief Intellectual Property Officer, announced the agreement with enthusiasm.

"The global patent cross-license between two companies covers cellular standard-essential patents including 5G. This agreement reflects the mutual recognition and respect for each other’s intellectual property and lays a solid foundation for our collaboration."

"OPPO has always respected intellectual property, advocated for reasonable fees, and supported the establishment of a long-term healthy IP ecosystem. We aim to resolve IP disputes between licensors and licensees through friendly negotiation, with mutual respect for the value of patents," Ying added.

Since its inception nearly two decades ago, OPPO has dedicated itself to extensive research and development, resulting in substantial innovations and valuable intellectual property.

By the end of June 2024, OPPO had filed over 103,000 patent applications worldwide, with more than 57,000 patents granted, of which 91 per cent are utility patents.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recognised OPPO's achievements, ranking the company ninth globally in Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) applications in 2023, marking its fifth consecutive year in the top ten.

A prominent player in 5G SEPs and smart device innovation, OPPO continues to drive the implementation of technology standards.

As of June 30, 2024, OPPO has filed over 6,200 global patent applications for 5G communication standards across more than 40 countries and regions.

The company has declared over 3,700 5G families to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and submitted more than 12,000 standard documents to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

According to reports by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) and IPlytics, OPPO ranks among the top globally in 5G SEP strength.

This collaboration between OPPO and Ericsson underscores the mutual respect and recognition of each other's intellectual property, paving the way for a robust and healthy IP ecosystem.

The partnership is set to accelerate the global deployment and enhancement of 5G technologies, benefiting both companies and the broader tech industry.
