As conversations around artificial intelligence (AI) gain momentum internationally, one organization in Kenya is stepping up to ensure the country is not left behind in tech growth.
This is Digital, a bold Pan-African tech learning platform, hosted an AI Appreciation Breakfast in Nairobi to mark the International Artificial Intelligence Appreciation Day.
Under the theme “The Age of AI: A Reality Check,” the significant event brought together a curated group of thought leaders, innovators, policymakers, and professionals.
The event reflected on the role AI is already playing and will continue to play in transforming African lives and livelihoods and why it is important for Kenyans to embrace it.
The ceremony also served as the launchpad for This is Digital’s upcoming AI Literacy Program, which is scheduled to officially kick off in August 2025.

The Nairobi event offered honest dialogues surrounding Africa’s readiness for the AI age and cut through the hype and conspiracy theories to explore both opportunities and risks.
Attendees were treated to candid insights from:
• Moses Kemibaro, Founder of Dotsavvy, who delivered the keynote on AI adoption in African businesses
• Susan Makau (International School of Advertising)
• Ndindi Nyoro, MP for Kiharu and a known tech champion
• Roseline Njogu, Principal Secretary, State Department for Diaspora Affairs
A panel of sector leaders then unpacked how AI is disrupting their industries:
• Eugene Mbugua, Founder of D&R Studios, on AI’s impact on content and entertainment
• Caroline Kendi, Founder of CK Marketing, on AI and marketing strategy
• Dr Catherine Gathu, Aga Khan University, on AI’s influence in medicine and diagnostics
• Philip Muigai, Cloud Factory, on AI and the future of HR and talent development
Each speaker brought it home; AI is no longer futuristic; it’s already here.
Following the breakfast, This is Digital officially announced the rollout in Kenya of its AI Literacy Program, a training initiative designed for:

• Educators who want to prepare future-ready learners
• Students ready to lead Africa’s digital revolution

The curriculum is designed to demystify AI, making it relatable, ethical, and usable, whether you are running a business, leading a classroom, or building a product.
According to the 2024 Oxford Insights AI Readiness Index, Kenya ranks 6th in the African continent, a sign that the infrastructure and ambition are already in place.
However, the index notes that mass digital confidence is still missing in Africa.
As AI begins to automate tasks, enhance decisions, and rewire industries, the knowledge gap between creators and users risks widening if no remedial action are taken urgently.
This is Digital’s initiative aims to bridge that divide by creating an inclusive ecosystem where Africans are not just AI consumers but creators and policymakers as well to democratize opportunity.
Whether you are in tech or teaching, banking or farming, there is a place for you in the AI conversation.
“Embrace change because AI changes everything,” said Kemibaro.
