Popular social network platform Facebook is down. Users have been met with error messages as the apps and sites owned by Facebook have become inaccessible.

The other Facebook-owned sites and apps affected include Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp.

The three apps and sites that share a common infrastructure stopped working just a few minutes past 6 pm.

Facebook's spokesperson Andy Stone took to Twitter and apologised for the problem however, he did not disclose the cause of the major outage neither did he give any indication of when the services would be restored.

"We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products," said Stone.

"We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience," he added.

The same statement was posted on the official Facebook Twitter account.

Instagram and WhatsApp also updated their users through their official Twitter accounts
