Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, has submitted a bid to host the 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as President William Ruto declared that this endeavour is part of the government's strategy to nurture skills and talent.

During the announcement, which took place on Monday at State House, Ruto emphasized the government's commitment to implementing measures that will enable Kenya to flourish in the realm of sports.

"We are focussed on harnessing the full potential of each sector for our prosperity," Ruto affirmed.

Ruto unveiled the East African Community Pamoja bid for AFCON 2027 while acknowledging the abundance of sporting and creative talent present in Kenya.

He stressed the sector's capacity to stimulate economic growth.

"This sector is a giant wellspring of opportunities. We will ensure we place Kenya on its rightful position as a sporting superpower," President Ruto affirmed.

Among the highlighted interventions pursued by the President were infrastructure development, improved monetization of sporting talent, and the restoration of Kenya's football to a reputable status.

Additionally, he emphasized the long-term strategy of attracting premier international sports and athletics events to Kenya.

"This will stimulate local sports, promote tourism, create employment and enhance our national sporting and athletic brand," Ruto explained.

Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba and Principal Secretary Jonathan Mueke were present during the announcement.
