Defending African volleyball champions KCB is optimistic of continuing with its reign as it readies for the 2023 African Club Championship slated for May 12 -22, 2023 in Kelibia, Tunisia.

The bankers, who have perpetually taken part in the annual continental competition, successfully trounced North Africa’s Al Ahly 3-1 in the finals to be crowned 2022 champions.

The squad sponsored by KCB Bank is captained by Edith Wisa and is scheduled to depart the country for Tunisia early next week ahead of the start of its 2023 volleyball campaign.

“This championship provides a great opportunity for us to showcase our volleyball talent across the continent while also exposing the players to international competition,” said KCB Head Coach Japeth Munala during the team’s training session in Nairobi.

He added, “We expect a valiant display from our team throughout the tournament for us to defend our title.”

After Sharon Jepchumba lost last year’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), Munala and his technical bench have boosted the squad with Esther Mutinda, Juliana Namutira, Elizabeth Lemosiany, Faith Cherotich and Pauline Chemutai.

They now join a pool of experienced players including Malkia Striker’s captain Mercy Moim, Edith Wisa and Libero Lincy Jeruto who will fly the Kenyan flag high in their debut contest.

KCB recently qualified for the semi-finals in the Paul Bitok Volleyball Tournament that will be held after the Club Championship after it was postponed due to the death of Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) president Waithaka Kioni.

“We know the uphill task that awaits us in Tunisia, as a team we are ready to conquer the continent once again and stamp our authority as the undisputed number one Volleyball team in Africa,” said Captain Edith Wisa.

25 teams, both men and women, have confirmed their participation in this year’s competition with record holders Al Ahly top on the competitive list.
