The Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has suspended Kenya from all international football competitions indefinitely.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced made the announcement suspending Kenya on Thursday evening during a press conference in Zurich, Switzerland.

FIFA cited government interference in football activities as the reason for the suspension.

Another country that was suspended by FIFA alongside Kenya was Zimbabwe for similar reasons.

“We had to suspend two of our member associations Kenya and Zimbabwe both for government interference in the activities of the football. These associations are suspended from all football activities with immediate effect and they know what needs to be done for them to be re-admitted or the suspension to be lifted,” Infantino said.

The suspension stops Kenya from playing in any international matches or Kenyan referees from officiating in the international matches.

However, FIFA issued a condition under which the suspension may be lifted and it includes reinstating the disbanded Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and dissolution of the Caretaker Committee that was put in place to run the affairs of football in Kenya.

The CS for Sports Amina Mohamed disbanded FKF in November 2020 over graft and appointed a 15-member committee led by retired Justice Aaron Ringera.

Following the recommendations by the inspection committee appointed by the registrar, FKF was disbanded and shortly after, the FKF boss Nick Mwendwa was arrested over graft claims and arraigned in court.

FIFA said it would not interfere with the investigations of Mwendwa because it does not support corruption.

The stalemate between the government and FKF caused the Kenyan national women's football team Harambee Starlets to withdraw from CAF Africa Women’s Cup of Nation (AWCON) competitions and has also harmed.
