Kenyan runners Evans Chebet and Peres Jepchirchir emerged triumphant in the men’s and women’s races during the Valencia Marathon held on Sunday. 

Chebet outpaced Lawrence Cherono, the reigning Chicago and Boston Marathon champion, to clinch the race by clocking a time of 2:03:00. 

His win cemented Kenya’s dominance in the Marathon with 18 wins in 39 editions.  

Cherono emerged second clocking 2:03:04 while defending champion, Ethiopia’s Birhanu Legese finished third in 2:03:16. 

World marathon bronze medalist Amos Kipruto was fourth in 2:03:33, colleague Reuben Kiprop fifth in 2:04:12 and two-time world marathon champion Abel Kirui finished seventh in 2:05:05. 

In the women’s marathon race, Peres Jepchirchir emerged victor in 2:17:16 as reigning New York Marathon champion Joyciline Jepkosgei finished a distant second in 2:18:40 and Namibian Helalia Johannes bagged a third sport in 2:19:52.

Valencia was Jepchirchir’s third win in three races she took part in this year and she smashed the women’s world record in the Prague Half Marathon and World Half Marathon.
