Switzerland has never beaten France in any competitive fixture but they began this match as if they're France's bogey team.

The French had the possession and the chances, but all the seven in the first half were off target.

The Swiss were happy to soak up pressure and made use of the ball well whenever they had it. Their endeavours were rewarded when they took the lead with their only shot on target in the first half.

They only had four shots at goal. Haris Seferovic got up ahead of Clement Lenglet to head home Steven Zuber's cross.

The underdogs led 1-0 at the break and were just 45 minutes away from doing the unthinkable.

The gods must have been smiling upon them because they were awarded a penalty after Zuber got away down the left and was taken out by Benjamin Pavard.

The referee waved play on but was called to the pitch-side monitor to review his decision. Penalty!

Up stepped Ricardo Rodriguez for the penalty only for Hugo Lloris to get down well on his right. Brilliant save! That save spurred the French on.

Karim Benzema made it 1-1 just two minutes later. Kylian Mbappe plays the ball into the striker, who takes a brilliant touch and chips the on-rushing keeper.

Flood gates open! Soon after it was 2-1 to France.

Antoine Griezmann's cross is flicked up by Yann Sommer but Benzema is there to head in at the back post...what a turnaround!

The game seemed to peter out with both teams seemingly tired from the sweltering heat of Bucharest.

Paul Pogba sprung it back to life with a beauty; what a goal it was!

First, Benzema's effort is blocked and the ball comes back to Pogba on the edge of the box.

He curls it into the top right corner. 3-1 France, quarter-finals looming. With ten minutes to go, Seferovic made it 3-2 and you'd think it was just a consolation. No!

Just when we were preparing our farewells for the Swiss, they made us wait for another 30 minutes. Mario Gavranovic equalised in the ninetieth minute, the forward striking the ball into the bottom left corner past Lloris from a defence-splitting pass by Granit Xhaka.

Kingsley Coman almost scored with the last kick of the match but couldn't beat the crossbar. 3-3 full-time.

Extra time was a seesaw affair with both teams missing chances but France was guilty of missing the best chances.

Mbappe was the biggest culprit.

Olivier Giroud almost scored but Sommer made a good save.

Three-all after 120 minutes! Penalties! Who has the nerves?

Switzerland won the toss and chose to go first.

Gavranovic scored, Pogba replied. All the first nine penalties were scored then stepped up the French poster boy, Kylian Mbappe.

Eyes and hopes of a nation on him but he could only miss. Yann Sommer is the Swiss hero!
