When you hear about golf, often times you will only think and talk of the players, the tournament sponsors and host golf clubs as the key components of the prestigious game.

However, the NCBA Golf Series has shifted focus to how much sponsorships by corporates can transform the game, players, and golf clubs while impacting the surrounding communities.

Beyond the prizes, the series launched in 2021 continues to economically empower the youth while growing golf in Kenya and the larger East Africa region one tee-off at a time.

Caddies play one of the most significant roles in the sport yet have most times remained in the back banner hence the decision by NCBA Golf Series to accord them more prominence.

One of NCBA Group’s sustainability commitments is to champion inclusive communities through regional sports development and the golf series fits right into this key pledge.

We spoke to a few caddies at the eight leg of the prestigious event held at Thika Sports Club in Kiambu County and they underscored just how NCBA Golf Series has changed their lives.

Selina Gitau, who has been at a caddie at Thika Sports Club for the past five years, says the series has accorded her the privilege to freely interact with players from all walks of life.

Selina says, apart from helping her to earn wages to take care of her family, golf has also enhanced her appreciation of the sport and NCBA Bank while also expanding her thinking.

“For those years I have been able to interact with different people and expanded my thinking,” she said enthusiastically.

In the last four years, NCBA Bank has held tournaments in various clubs across Kenya and the wider East African region with 2025 being the fifth year the bank is sponsoring golf.

NCBA Bank has held up to 30 golf tournaments so far in 2025, with 49 junior events slated for Kenya, 22 in Uganda, and 3 in Tanzania and also conducted a total of 41 qualifier events.

The NCBA Golf Series 2025 golf calendar includes a total of 159 events, meaning more caddies from across Kenya will get a chance to earn a living and get financially empowered.

Typhina Nduta, who has been a caddie at Thika Sports Club since 2022, says the series has exposed her to the beautiful game and she is now a good golfer while earning her keeps.

“It has helped me. For one, I help my family, and I do interact with a lot of people. I get inspired seeing ladies in business, ladies who have done good in life. It inspires me to do better. In the future, more than being a caddie, I’d like to expand more,” opined Nduta.

NCBA Golf Series has impacted more than 10,316 golfers and more than 20,000 caddies from across East Africa with NCBA sponsoring the 2025 series to the tune of Sh60 million.

On his part, Peter Kimani revealed that the series sponsored by NCBA has enabled him to learn more about financial products the Tier-1 regional financial powerhouse has to offer.

“I have learnt a lot about NCBA bank since they sponsor the sport as well as golfers and we all enjoy the game together,” Kimani indicated delightedly.

He added: “I am proud to be a caddie and I know, after interacting with the players today, I will go home with a branded NCBA t-shirt and cap.”

Owing to the sponsorship by NCBA, Kimani says, caddies get an opportunity to learn and play golf every Monday at the Thika Sports Club, which is located in Thika, Kiambu County.

Agnes and Caroline say they have learnt how to play and love the game during the series and interacted with many players and NCBA staff even as they earn their living as caddies.

The NCBA Group has been deliberate in its efforts to open the golf doors to more people across the different age sets and also incorporated individuals who are specially enabled.

And as part of its pledge to grow the sport sustainably, NCBA has promoted environmental conservation and worked with golf partners and clubs to protect the series’ host courses through various tree-growing initiatives as part of its aim grow 10 million trees by 2030.
