Eriksen collapsed during Denmark's opening game against Finland. His life was saved when CPR was administered to him on the pitch and his heart was re-started with a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital. He recovered after undergoing heart surgery.

Kalu was walked off the pitch with an ice pack on his head and made an amazing recovery to continue playing but was substituted several minutes later to a standing ovation from all in the stadium.
