Detectives from the DCI Kilimani have cracked open a meticulously planned vehicle importation scam that saw a Kenyan lose Sh1.1 million to two fraudsters who promised him cars that never existed, only to disappear without a trace once the money was in their hands.
The elaborate scheme began on 27 May 2022, when s, posing as a reputable salesperson at Rana Motors along Ngong Road, convinced his unsuspecting victim that he could secure for him two vehicles—a Toyota Probox Extra and a 14-seater Toyota Hiace —at a total cost of Sh2.9 million.
Eager to finalise the deal, the victim transferred a substantial deposit of Sh1.1 million, fully believing that he had struck a deal of a lifetime and was about to receive his dream cars.
However, what was supposed to be a smooth transaction quickly turned into a nightmare when Hussein vanished without a trace, cutting off all communication and leaving the victim stranded with nothing but dashed hopes and a deep financial loss.
For months, the case seemed to have gone cold, with the fraudster slipping through the cracks and evading capture.

However, forensic intelligence would eventually prove to be his undoing.
After an extensive investigation, detectives tracked him down to Crystal Apartments in Athi River, where he had been hiding, thinking he had escaped justice.
Upon raiding his residence, officers uncovered several SIM cards believed to have been instrumental in orchestrating the fraudulent scheme, further solidifying the case against him.
With their main suspect finally in custody, detectives pressed him for information, and under the weight of mounting evidence, Hussein led them to Makongeni, Thika, where his accomplice, Brian Omweri, was also taken into custody.
A thorough search at Omweri’s location led to the recovery of a SIM card linked to a Sh550,000 payment from the defrauded victim, further exposing the extent of the elaborate con they had been running.
Now, with the walls closing in on them, the two fraudsters have found themselves behind bars, cooling their heels in police custody as they await their day in court, where they will have to answer for the deception that left their victim counting losses.
