The death toll from the devastating floods caused by the heavy rains affecting various regions of the country has risen to 103, according to government figures.

This comes after about 42 people were reported to have drowned in  Central Kenya after a dam in the Kijabe area burst its banks on Monday.

According to the Naivasha area Police Commander Stephen Kirui, 17 among the 42 victims of the unfortunate incident whose bodies have already been retrieved were minors.

"We have so far recovered 42 bodies, which include 17 minors, following the early morning incident where a dam burst its banks in Kijabe area and rescue and search operations are going on," Kirui stated.

During a meeting to review emergency response actions related to the ongoing flood situation across the country, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua announced that the government is planning to allocate Sh4 billion emergency fund to assist Kenyans affected.

This follows the government's intensified efforts to address the rising cases of disasters.

"We are in discussions with the National Treasury, and we are trying to put up 4 billion shillings as an emergency fund," Gachagua stated.

Gachagua also said the National Youth Service (NYS) personnel will be deployed to help in the resettling of displaced person and perform other related duties.

"The National Youth Service will be facilitated to resettle the displaced families, unblock drains and waterways, and handle the spilling dams," he added.

The rains have caused widespread destruction for vital infrastructure including roads and bridges, prompting the government to postpone the reopening of schools for second term.
