Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko’s six lawyers representing him in a Sh10 million corruption case called it quits on Monday.

The lawyers led by Dr John Khaminwa accused the court of bias and unfairness in handling the case facing Sonko, who was in January impeached by the Nairobi County Assembly.

The lawyers accused the anti-corruption court of denying them sufficient time to collect and collate evidence from the politician’s former lawyers and adequately prepare for the case.

Dr Khaminwa says Chief Magistrate Douglas Ogoti insists on continuing with the case against advice of six doctors, who say Sonko should rest after recent discharge from hospital.

The advocates claim the corruption trial of the former Nairobi County boss was being conducted in violation of the requirements of the law and the Constitution.

They say that is the basis for their decision to withdraw from the case, terming the process illegal and that the magistrate determined to imprison Sonko by all means.

Dr Khaminwa wondered why the trial was being conducted minus full media coverage, which he says is in contravention of the law for a public trial.

“I do not want to participate in an illegal process,” said Dr Khaminwa during a press briefing.
