Kenya's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are poised to take centre stage in the nation's burgeoning digital economy, thanks to a strategic partnership between the Kenyan ICT Authority and the UK's Digital Access Program.

This collaborative effort marks a pivotal step towards equipping Kenyan SMEs with the essential digital skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the global marketplace.

CEO of the ICT Authority, Stanley Kamanguya, expressed the commitment to elevate government service delivery by leveraging digitization and automation.

The focus is on unlocking opportunities within the digital space and fortifying the digital economy.

"The ICT Authority in collaboration with both Public and Private sector are working to accelerate the automation process and to build resilience on the digital infrastructure to safeguard our growth," Kamanguya stated.

At the heart of this ambitious initiative lies the "Citizen Digital Skills Program," a meticulously designed curriculum catering to diverse skill levels.

From foundational elements like online communication and basic navigation to advanced training in e-commerce, social media marketing, and cybersecurity, the program equips participants with the confidence and competence to navigate the dynamic digital landscape.

Recognizing the importance of long-term impact, the program adopts a "Training of Trainers" approach.

This ensures sustainability and broadens reach, aiming to empower five million Kenyans within the first year and a staggering 20 million by 2025.

"Many of our citizens are missing out on many opportunities within the digital economy which is creating employment for millions of people across the world," emphasized Zilpher Owiti, ICT Director for Partnerships, Innovation, and Capacity Development.

"We would like our citizens to take part in this program."

Complementing this ambitious vision are the government's parallel efforts to expand broadband access, establish free Wi-Fi hotspots, and build digital hubs across the nation.

By creating a robust and accessible digital infrastructure, Kenya lays the groundwork for a future where SMEs not only survive but thrive, contributing significantly to a vibrant digital economy and a prosperous future for the nation.
