Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has called for relocation of the Kamiti Maximum Prison and Langa'ta Women's Prison out of Nairobi County.

Matiang’i has proposed that the two major prisons in the city for male and female inmates be moved to Kitale or Bomet and the prime city lands be used for development purposes.

The Interior CS also proposes that the Industrial Area, Nairobi West and Shimo La Tewa in Mombasa County also be moved outside the particular cities.

“Why should we have prisons in the middle of the city when we could use that prime land to develop and increase amenities of the city?” Matiang'i posed.

He was speaking on Monday at the launch of National Land Commission's 2021-2026 strategic plan which will be implemented to the tune of Sh20 billion.

Kamiti Maximum Prison is located on a 1,200-acre land, with most of it largely unutilised, while Lang'ata Prison is erected on approximately 50 acres of land, with a large part already grabbed.

This is the second strategic plan to be implemented after the 2013/2018 plan which has guided the commission so far.
