The High Court on Wednesday extended its orders barring Nairobi County from hiking parking fees for private vehicles and PSVs.

Justice Anthony Mrima ruled the order issued on December 30, 2019 suspending Nairobi county’s move to hike parking fees from Sh200 to Sh400 for private vehicle  remain in effect until April 21, 2021.

Justice Marina also suspended the county government’s decision to increase seasonal parking fees for commuter matatus.

In the new rates, seasonal parking rates for a 14-seater matatu was hiked from Sh3,650 to Sh5,000, 32-seater from Sh5,250 to Sh8,000 and 51-seater buses from 7,500 to Sh10,000.

Justice Mrima said the fees remain suspended until April 21 when the court wil hear two petitions filed by the Matatu Owners Association (MOA) and the Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek).

City Hall on December 2, 2019 announced the parking fees hike after the passage of the Finance Act, 2019.

MOA and Corel, in their petitions, argue that the proposed parking fees hike, if implemented, will greatly violate the rights of consumers.
