Renowned sports journalist Sean Cardovillis, a prominent figure in both national and international sports commentary, has tragically passed away at his residence in Westlands, Nairobi.

This sudden and unexpected loss which has left the media fraternity and sports enthusiasts in profound mourning was announced on Saturday morning by Capital FM.

Sean, who had been a voice to reckon with in the world of sports, was found deceased just outside his house along Rhapta Road in Westlands, where he resided alone.

The discovery was made by a cleaner who had arrived to tend to the area leading to Sean's fourth-floor apartment.

The circumstances surrounding his passing remain unclear, with police unable to determine whether he was preparing to leave for work or if he had succumbed to his fate the night before.

Upon the cleaner's shocking discovery, an ambulance was summoned to the scene, accompanied by law enforcement officials.

Regrettably, medical personnel pronounced Sean dead on-site before transporting his lifeless body to the mortuary.

As investigations into his passing commence, authorities have yet to pinpoint the exact cause of his death, which has prompted the scheduling of an autopsy to shed light on this tragic event.

Colleagues and friends are reeling from the loss of this sports commentary icon.

Danny Munyi, the Programmes Director at Capital FM, expressed his disbelief, stating, "It is shocking, I still can't believe Sean is no more. We have lost an icon in Sports."

Sean was celebrated for his compelling commentary and boundless enthusiasm for sports, both domestically and on the global stage.

At Capital FM, where he had a substantial impact, he will be fondly remembered for bringing sports to life for millions of listeners worldwide.

Bernard Momanyi, Capital FM's Editorial Director, paid tribute to Cardovillis, describing him as a legend in sports journalism. "Sean's passion and dedication to bringing the world of sports to our listeners were unmatched, and his legacy in the world of sports journalism will forever remain an integral part of our newsroom's identity."

Coincidentally, Sean had recently made a triumphant return to Capital FM, marking his comeback after an astonishing 18-year absence.

His presence was celebrated on social media, where he enthusiastically announced his return and upcoming role as a sports presenter, declaring, "I'm BACK! After 18 years, it's great to return to Capital FM."

In addition to presenting sports updates during the weekdays, he was set to host the Saturday Music & Sports show as part of the station's exciting sports coverage rebrand.

This return came after a challenging period in Sean's life, during which he battled pneumonia that necessitated a public appeal for financial support.

In February 2022, he reached out to the public for assistance as he grappled with chest pains and pneumonia, which stemmed from what initially appeared to be a common cold in September 2021.

His health continued to deteriorate, leading to a diagnosis of pneumonia and subsequent antibiotic treatment.

Later in December, Cardovillis tested positive for Covid-19, compelling him to self-isolate for five days until his recovery.

The sudden passing of Sean Cardovillis has left a void in the world of sports journalism that will be challenging to fill.

His passion, dedication, and iconic voice will be deeply missed by sports enthusiasts and media professionals alike, both in Kenya and around the globe.
