3,500 young people are set to be involved directly and indirectly in the planned construction of 220 Affordable Housing Units in Lurambi Constituency, Kakamega County by the State.

The Lurambi affordable housing project is scheduled to be commissioned by President William Ruto on Saturday afternoon as part of his tour of the Western region of Kenya.

Ruto says the project aims to offer affordable and decent housing to area residents and also provide job opportunities for the youth, women in construction and the Jua Kali sector.

The developer, Top Choice Surveillance Ltd, has partnered with Kakamega Engineering and Fabricators Association and KEFINCO Carpenters Association that boast of more than 100 skilled artisans.

The Developer of the Lurambi project is expected to ring-fence a sum of about Sh26 million for the ore than 1,200 doors and a similar number of windows needed for the construction.

The government and the developers are also pushing for the recruitment of young people and women in the constituency into registered Jua Kali associations to offer other supplies.

State Department for Housing will involve TVETs including Shamberere Technical Training Institute and Sigalagala National Polytechnic for technical support when the project starts.

The Lurambi affordable housing project will be situated on a four-acre parcel of land belonging to the National Government and is scheduled to be completed by April 2025.

The developer will erect nine apartment blocks consisting of 60 studio, 20 one-bedroom, 100 two-bedroom and 40 three-bedroom units to be built at a cost of Sh473 million.

The developer has undertaken to expand the existing road, water and sewer line infrastructure as well as build a social hall, playground, commercial zone and a tree nursery.

The Lurambi project is the government’s third Affordable Housing Program (AHP) at the constituency level after launching similar initiatives in Gichugu and Bahati constituencies.

The national Government has so far awarded 17 contracts in Lot 1 for development and advertised a further 35 in Lot 2 for the constituency level affordable housing program as the Housing Levy comes to effect.
