Two people have been killed and 10 others seriously injured after suspected terrorists attacked travellers on the Lamu-Witu-Garsen highway on Tuesday morning.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kindiki Kithure says the raiders struck at 7:40am at Lango La Simba on the border of Lamu and Tana River Counties with scores reported missing.

One of the victims of the vicious attack died on the spot while the other succumbed to their serious wounds while being evacuated from the scene to access emergency treatment.

Kindiki says officers from the Nyangoro Forward Operating Base, who were on a highway clearing patrol, repulsed the more than 60 suspected terrorists who fled into Boni Forest.

“Two of the victims of this attack had life threatening injuries, as a result of which, one succumbed while being evacuated for emergency Intensive Care Unit (ICU) treatment, bringing the total deaths to two,” said Kindiki in a statement to the media.

The ministry says it has mounted a joint security operation by elite contingents of the National Police Service (NPS) and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to track the armed attackers.

The operation is also meant to search and rescue an unknown number of civilians who are reported to be missing following the attack even as the injured persons receive treatment.
