A shocking incident unfolded on Thursday in Emgwen Constituency, Nandi County where a woman from Kolong village allegedly took the law into her own hands, killing a man she claims defiled her two-year-old daughter.

The accused woman, identified as Cheptoo, confessed to the murder in a phone call with the area chief, prompting a series of events that culminated in a violent clash between the police and an angry mob.

The Kamombo Patrol Base received the initial report from the area chief, who informed the police about Cheptoo's confession regarding the killing of the alleged paedophile.

Upon arriving at the scene, the officers from Kamombo were met with strong resistance from an irate mob, which was determined to exact vigilante justice against Cheptoo.

Nandi Central Sub-County Police Commander, David Anyir, addressed the press about the volatile situation. He stated, "They wanted to kill Cheptoo. The officers from Kamombo then called for reinforcements from Kapsabet Police Station."

Recognizing the urgent need for additional support, officers from Kapsabet promptly rushed to the scene to assist their colleagues and ensure the woman's safety.

Despite the hostile environment created by the mob, law enforcement officers managed to rescue Cheptoo after a challenging and tumultuous ordeal.

However, the crowd's anger manifested itself in destructive behaviour, with the patrol vehicle's windshield being smashed by enraged residents.

Disturbingly, the mob vehemently refused to allow the retrieval of the deceased's body.

"Our patrol vehicle's windscreen was smashed by residents but we were able to rescue the woman. The mob however barred us from retrieving the deceased's body," said Anyir.

Commander Anyir elaborated on the aftermath, revealing that Cheptoo's house was set ablaze by unidentified individuals subsequent to her rescue.

In an attempt to resolve the escalating situation, the police have sought the assistance of the area's chief, requesting him to negotiate for the release of the man's remains which had not yet materialised by the time of this publication.

Cheptoo, the accused woman, is presently receiving medical treatment for her injuries at Kapsabet Referral Hospital while awaiting legal action.

The incident has left Kolong village shaken, as the community grapples with the repercussions of the violent clash and the troubling allegations surrounding the defilement of a young child.

As investigations into this tragic event continue, it underscores the importance of a fair and impartial legal process to ensure justice for all parties involved.

The clash between vigilantism and due process serves as a reminder of the critical need for comprehensive approaches to address issues related to sexual assault, while safeguarding the rights of both victims and accused individuals.

The unfolding events in Nandi County highlight the deep-seated societal challenges surrounding child protection.

This incident calls for immediate attention and a concerted effort to implement effective strategies that uphold justice, safeguard the well-being of all community members, and prevent the escalation of violence.
