The Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs has responded tersely to United Nations Human Rights Office’s condemnation of alleged police excesses during anti-government protests.

In a response on Twitter, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Abraham Korir SingOei blasted the UN Human Rights Office for reportedly not condemning lawbreakers during the demos.

While condemning deaths during the anti-government demos led by opposition chief Raila Odinga, Dr Sing’oei blamed gangs for looting, destroying property and disrupting businesses.

“While regretting & decrying the unfortunate loss of life or injury, the reckless mobilization of lawless gangs to loot, destroy property, disrupt business, deprive many of means of livelihood and create an environment of disorder, must receive equal condemnation,” he said in response to the UN Human Rights Office on Twitter on Friday.

In a statement earlier Friday, UN Human Rights Office Spokesperson Jeremy Laurence criticized escalating chaos and claims of use of force by police during opposition demos.

Kenya Police Service is headed by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome.

Laurence demanded a probe into the allegations indicating that reports show that up to 23 Kenyans have been killed and many more wounded during the said demos in the last week.
