One man has been shot and injured as clashes between anti-government protesters and police escalated in Kibra in Nairobi on Monday.

The middle-aged man was allegedly shot by police during the protests near Toi Market as police made frantic efforts to bar protesters from proceeding to the Nairobi CBD.

Eyewitnesses at the scene claim the injured man is a mechanic and was not taking part in the demonstrations being spearheaded by Azimio la Umoja party leader Raila Odinga.

They claim the man, who was rushed to hospital on a boda boda, was shot by a policeman, even as the National Police Service Commission is yet to issue a statement on the matter.

This comes amid running battles pitting protesters against police in Kibra, Ngong Road, KICC and other areas in Nairobi as well as ugly battles between the two sides in Kisumu City on Monday.
