Four traffic police officers were arrested on Tuesday morning by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) following numerous complaints from users of Outering Road in Nairobi.

The officers were allegedly caught openly collecting bribes from motorists, tarnishing the reputation of law enforcement.

The arrested officers have been identified as Sergeant Burton Mathenge, Police Constable Charo Katana, Corporal Sarah Karimi of Buruburu Police Station, and Sergeant Abraham Kiptoo of Embakasi Police Station.

The officers were apprehended by EACC detectives at approximately 9:30 am during a sting operation.

During the operation, investigators managed to recover a total of Sh15,820 in predominantly 50, 100, and 200 denominations, believed to be proceeds of the bribery scheme.

The evidence collected will serve as crucial material in the ongoing investigation against the accused officers.

Following their arrest, the suspects were promptly escorted to the EACC Integrity Centre Police Station, where they were interrogated further by the investigating team.

Subsequently, they were released on police bail of Sh10,000 each, pending the completion of the remaining aspects of the investigation.

The arrest of these officers serves as a significant step towards curbing corruption and ensuring the integrity of the law enforcement agencies in the country.

It demonstrates the commitment of the EACC to address issues of misconduct and malpractice within the police force.

The EACC has been actively working to root out corruption and hold accountable those who abuse their positions of authority for personal gain.

The agency continues to encourage citizens to report any instances of corruption they encounter, as it plays a vital role in combating such practices and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability.

The arrested officers will face the full weight of the law if found guilty of engaging in bribery.

This incident serves as a reminder that no one is above the law and that the actions of a few should not overshadow the dedication and professionalism of the majority of law enforcement officers who diligently serve the public interest.
