A clergyman was on Monday charged with raping a 22-year-old female member of his church during a prayer session inside the Full Gospel Church, Karurina in Embu County.

Pastor Benson Mwaniki Njuki was charged with caressing the woman’s private parts and penetrating her minus her assent during Madaraka Day on June 1, 2023 in Embu West.

The man of the cloth is reported to have pounced on the woman while she was kneeling down during a prayer session at the church before committing the despicable acts on her.

The court learnt that the clergyman, who was donning his full church regalia at the time of the incident, subjugated the woman and covered her mouth to stop her from raising alarm.

Pastor Njuki was later arrested after the woman and her mother reported the matter at Itabua Police Station, with tests at Embu Level 5 Hospital confirming she had been raped.

But he denied the charges before Embu Senior Principal Magistrate Robert Gitau and was freed on a Sh100,000 bond and a surety of the same amount or a Sh50,000 cash bail.

The case is slated to be mentioned on June 11, 2023.
