President William Ruto has expressed concerns over the relatively low volume of trade between Kenya and Russia, despite the immense potential for growth.

In an effort to address this issue, the two countries have agreed to sign a trade pact that aims to invigorate business activities.

Speaking at State House in Nairobi on Monday, Ruto welcomed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, with discussions centering on the pressing need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council.

The objective is to make the Council more representative and better equipped to address the demands of the 21st century.

“The continent can bring to the table rich ideas, suggestions and experiences that would serve the globe well,” Ruto said.

The President underscored the significance of countries like Russia in supporting Kenya and Africa in the establishment of a new framework for the Council.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, Russia holds a prominent position alongside the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and China.

Additionally, the Council includes 10 non-permanent members elected for two years.

Regarding the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ruto reiterated Kenya's unwavering commitment to upholding the principles of territorial integrity among member states, as outlined in the UN Charter.

“Kenya calls for a resolution of the conflict in a manner respectful to the two parties,” the president said.

In response, Lavrov expressed appreciation for the 60 years of friendship shared between Russia and Kenya.

He noted that Russia's relationship with the African continent has gained momentum since the 2019 Russia-Africa Summit.

Lavrov also highlighted the growing scientific cooperation between the two nations.

Lavrov's visit to Nairobi was part of his journey to attend a meeting of the BRICs Ministers of Foreign and International Relations in Cape Town, South Africa.
