In a significant development, President William Ruto has appointed former Sports Cabinet Secretary Rashid Echesa as the new chairperson for the Kenya Water Towers Agency.

The announcement of the appointment was made through a Gazette notice dated May 18, 2023.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Paragraph 6 (1) (a) of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Order, 2012, as read together with section 51 (1) of the Interpretation and General Provisions Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint Rashid Echesa to be the Chairperson of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Board, for a period of three years, with effect from the 19th May 2023," the gazette notice read.

Echesa took to his social media accounts to congratulate himself on the appointment and express his excitement at the same while thanking Ruto for considering him for the position.

"Congratulations to me for this next step. Am indebted and beholden to H.E The President Dr. @WilliamsRuto for considering me for this noble appointment as the Chairman of Kenya Water Towers Agency Board (KWTA)," Echesa wrote.

This appointment marks Echesa's entry into a vital leadership role within the Kenya Water Towers Agency. As the chairperson, he will be responsible for overseeing the agency's operations and working towards the preservation and sustainable management of Kenya's water towers.

Consequently, L. Arch. Robert M. Kariuki, who was previously appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta, has been removed from the position.

Furthermore, Environment Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya has also made key appointments to the Kenya Water Towers Agency Board.

Elisha Busienei and Michael Waititu Maina have been selected as board members, in accordance with the powers granted by Paragraph 6 (1) (g) of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Order, 2012.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by Paragraph 6 (1) (g) of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Order, 2012, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry appoints to be members of the Kenya Water Towers Agency Board, for a period of three years, with effect from the 19th May, 2023."

These appointments signify a shift in leadership within the Kenya Water Towers Agency, with Echesa at the helm and Busienei and Maina as newly appointed board members. It is expected that this reconfiguration will contribute to the agency's efforts in conserving and safeguarding the critical water towers of Kenya.

With the new chairperson and board members assuming their roles, the Kenya Water Towers Agency can look forward to addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring the sustainable management of the country's invaluable water resources.
