The Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has issued a public notification announcing the arrest of Ezekiel Ombok Odero, the Head of the New Life Prayer Centre/Church in Mavueni, located within Malindi Sub-County of Kilifi County.

According to Kindiki Odero was taken into custody on Thursday where the necessary legal procedures in preparation to face charges related to the tragic mass killing of his followers are underway.

“It Is notified for information of the general public that today Thursday, 27th April 2023, Mr Ezekiel Ombok Odero the Head of New Life Prayer Centre/Church at Mavueni within Malindi Sub-County of Kilifi County has been arrested and is being processed to face criminal charges related to mass killing of his followers,” Kindiki said.

Moreover, in light of these distressing circumstances, Kindiki has further declared the immediate closure of the controversial church.

This indefinite closure is deemed essential to ensure public safety and maintain the integrity of the ongoing investigation.

Over 100 individuals, who were reportedly holed up at the location, have been successfully evacuated by the responsible authorities.

These individuals will be required to provide detailed statements as part of the investigative process, enabling a thorough examination of the events that transpired.

“The said Church has been shut down,” Kindiki added

“The over 100 people who were holed up at the premises have been evacuated and will be required to record statements.”

Odero's arrest comes amid intensive investigations revolving around one Pastor Paul Mackenzie Nthenge of the Good News International Church, who allegedly instructed his followers to abstain from food in order to "encounter Jesus."
