Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has declared a dusk to dawn curfew at Chakama Ranch in Shakahola, Kilifi County for 30 days following the discovery of 90 bodies.

In a gazette notice on Tuesday, Kindiki barred movements into and out of the expansive ranch in Lango Baya in Malindi from 6pm to 6am after being declared a “disturbed area.”

“Pursuant to Section 106(1) of the National Police Service Act (CAP 11A) and Section 8(1) of the Public Order Act (CAP 56) of the Laws of Kenya, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration has declared Chakama Ranch, all that land known as L.R Number 13472/1 measuring 20,418 hectares and situated in Lango Baya Division, Malindi Sub-County, of Kilifi County, a disturbed area,” said Kindiki.

He added, “Curfew orders have also been declared and Gazetted within the said area between 1800 HRS in the evening up to and until 0600 HRS in the morning for a period of thirty (30) days.”

He also banned the public from accessing the ranch where a church linked to pastor Paul Mackenzie, where more than 100 people are believed to have starved to death is located.

“The area is an active security operation zone and no access to it by the public shall be permitted effective today 26th April 2023, except as may be permitted by the operation Commander and/or until these orders are vacated,” he said.

Kindiki further banned all public gatherings, processions or movement into and out of Chakama Ranch during the period of the curfew to allow the police to finish their operation.

“There shall be no public gatherings, processions or movement either alone or as a group during the period of curfew into and out of Chakama Ranch except as shall be permitted, in writing, by the Kilifi County Police Commander in consultation with the Operation Commander,” he added.

A public information, tracing and support centre has been set up at the entrance to the ranch and members of the public urged to file any reports of missing persons for assistance.

The 90 followers of the Good News International Church run by controversial pastor Mackenzie and "Zablon wa Yesu" are said to have been convinced to starve to death to meet Jesus resulting in what is now being termed a massacre in Kilifi.
