The Board of the Kenya Red Cross Society has announced that Dr. Asha Mohammed will step down from her position as Secretary General for personal reasons, effective Friday.

Asha has been in the position since January 2020, and prior to that, she held the positions of Deputy Secretary General and Director for Health and Social Services at the Kenya Red Cross.

Asha's role as Secretary General came at a time when the world was facing a difficult humanitarian context, with the COVID-19 pandemic and the worst drought that Kenya has experienced in several decades.

Under her leadership, the Kenya Red Cross has remained committed to being "always there" to respond to emergencies and support communities.

The Board is confident that Asha will oversee an effective transition process with the support of the board, staff, volunteers, and partners of the Kenya Red Cross.

In the next few months, Asha will support leadership transition as she hands over in an acting capacity, to the Deputy Secretary General Ahmed Idris.

The Board expressed gratitude for Asha's service, passion, and commitment during her time as Secretary General, and acknowledged her contributions towards responding to emergencies and supporting communities.

Asha has been an inspiration to the staff, volunteers, partners, and members of the Kenya Red Cross Society, and they look forward to her continued support in the future as a community leader and life member of the Kenya Red Cross.

As the Kenya Red Cross Society prepares for a new chapter, the Board assures its stakeholders that they will continue to work towards their mandate of supporting communities in times of emergencies, and ensuring a smooth transition process under Asha's guidance.
