The 'Change the Story' initiative, launched by NCBA Bank, has planted over 7 million trees across Kenya with like-minded partners, leading to the restoration of degraded forest sites to biodiversity-rich forests.
NCBA invested Sh23 million in its sustainability initiative, 'Change the Story,' to establish a 1 million indigenous seedling nursery in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service at Karura Forest and four tree nurseries in Kieni with the World Wide Fund.
The bank acknowledges that the fight for environmental conservation is not solely the private sector's responsibility, as the government has undertaken several green initiatives in tree planting, such as the African Landscape Restoration initiative.
“I would also like to acknowledge that is it not just us within the private sector fighting this good fight, the government has undertaken several green initiatives in tree planting. For instance, through the African Landscape Restoration initiative,” she said.
This initiative aims to plant 15 billion trees, reduce greenhouse emissions, stop and reverse deforestation, and restore 5.1 million hectares of deforested landscapes in Kenya.
David Kanarire, Deputy Governor of Nyeri, recognised the Kieni Climate Initiative (KCI) during the event for its instrumental role in environmental rehabilitation.
The event underscores NCBA Bank's commitment to inspiring greatness every day and promoting a sustainable future for all.
Wainaina urges everyone to take an active role in planting more trees and supporting the culture of planting to safeguard the environment for future generations.
“I urge us to all work together to safeguard the environment for future generations by taking an active role in planting more trees and supporting the culture of planting,” Wainaina said.
