Detectives based at the DCI homicide department are concluding their investigations into the death of Jeff Mwathi, 23, who passed away on February 22, 2023, under unclear circumstances.

The case has gained significant public interest, prompting DCI Director Mohamed Amin to order fresh investigations into the mysterious death of the young man, in order to establish the circumstances leading to his demise on that fateful morning.

The homicide team and crime scene experts, based at the DCI National Forensic Laboratory, have revisited the scene, conducted a scientific scene reconstruction exercise, and recorded fresh statements from witnesses to unravel the mystery surrounding the death.

As recommended by the homicide experts, the deceased's body was exhumed for a fresh autopsy, and toxicological samples were obtained in order to determine whether the deceased had consumed alcohol or any other toxic substances prior to his death.

DNA samples have also been obtained from the deceased and persons of interest in this case for comparison to find out whether allegations of sexual molestation before the deceased’s death are credible.

Other aspects of the investigation, including a forensic analysis of CCTV footage obtained from the apartment where the incident occurred, and cyber analysis of digital data, have also been conducted for a comprehensive probe.

Currently, the investigators are awaiting a report from the government pathologist, which will inform part of their final course of action.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations continues to request patience from the public and the family of the deceased as investigations into this case enter the final stages.
