Azimio leader Raila Odinga was forced to cut off his address to his supporters after police lobbed several teargas canisters outside Serena Hotel along Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi.

Raila was set to address a presser flanked by other Azimio bigwigs on the progress of his anti-government demonstrations when police violently dispersed the large crowd.

The heavy deployment of police officers blocked their entry into town forcing Raila, Kalonzo Musyoka, Martha Karua, Jeremiah Kioni, George Wajackoyah among others to speed off in a convoy.

Police deployment of a police water cannon and teargas forced Raila and his convoy to flee the scene snaking their way to Upper Hill then to Haile Selassie Avenue then to Gikomba en route to Kamukunji.

“Today was a holiday. But this is just a sneak peek. More is yet to come. They are cowards, they are lobbing teargas at us, but we don’t care. We shall overcome. It is time for redemption. I am ready. We shall proceed,” Raila told hims supporters in Eastleigh.

Raila had left his supporters guessing his whereabouts for the better part of the day as street protests reigned amid rumours he had been barricaded in his Kerarapon house.

"We shall proceed with demos every Monday until we redeem the country," added Raila.

Kalonzo accused the Ruto government of violating the constitution by disrupting the Azimio demonstrations and demanded the release of opposition leaders who have been arrested.

In all the stops the Raila convoy has made from Serena en route to Kamukunji police have lobbed teargas to disperse crowds gathered to listen to the addresses by the Azimio top leadership.

The former Prime Minister has vowed to sustain the protests demanding the opening of the IEBC servers in relation to the August 2022 presidential election, a consultative constitution of the IEBC Selection Panel and the tackling of the spiraling cost of living in Kenya.
