Former Secretary General of Kenya African National Union (KANU), Nick Salat, has now joined President William Ruto’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Salat, who was flanked by a host of former officials of the independence party, was welcomed to the party by UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

The former KANU SG pledged to support President Ruto’s development agenda coming three months after he was suspended from KANU followed by his resignation last month.

Salat explained that he opted to join UDA, which is the majority party in the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition, after KANU allegedly lost its direction and unity.

Salat resigned from KANU after he fell out with the party leader, former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, leading to his suspension for alleged violation of the party's Constitution.

In his resignation letter three weeks ago, he accused Moi of betrayal and undermining him maintaining that his dismissal from his position as KANU Secretary General was unlawful.

“It is my position that my purported dismissal from the position of Secretary General as communicated through the press was unlawful and against the rules of natural justice,” Salat said then.


Other former KANU officials who followed Salat to UDA include Youth Leader Brenda Majune, Women Leader Betty Adera, Frank Mbogo and Habib Omar. 

UDA has been on a poaching spree even since President Ruto was sworn into office with the recently appointed Malala being the face of the raid by the ruling party on Raila Odinga's opposition alliance Azimio La Umoja parties and the push to fold political parties under Kenya Kwanza.
