Police have arrested an imposter who has been masquerading as a Firearms Licensing Board (FLB) officer.

The 42-year-old suspect identified as Dominic Ondari Ombogi was arrested last weekend at his Nguluni home in Matungulu, Machakos County following a court order issued by the Kahawa Law Courts.

Transnational Organised Crime detectives busted Ombogi while in possession of various fake FLB documents and stamps after intel placed him in the middle of a syndicate that issued bogus firearm certificates to applicants who would wish to circumvent the vetting process.

Ombogi, who has been out of jail on a Sh500,000 bond has been in and out of court fighting such cases as theft of firearms and creating a document without authority in a city court.

In his most recent case, Ombogi hoodwinked a young man in Kajiado County into believing he could transfer his deceased father’s firearm and sent the young man on a wild goose chase while setting up the stage to steal the firearm.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Ombogi, who poses as a well-connected resource person on the board has only operated in the underworld and never sat on the board as he claims.

Despite that, the detectives recovered several filled firearm application forms, psychiatrist reports from Mathare Referral Hospital bearing various names, a Central Firearms Bureau seal, various FLB and Armatech Kenya Ltd rubbers stamps, four civilian firearm certificates, forged letters from the Nairobi region police command and several bank statements.

The detectives have since established Ombogi works in collaboration with other persons who impersonate board officials.

He targets vulnerable victims who are hasty to get cleared for firearm ownership, recklessly providing fake certificates to anyone as long as he gets paid.

The suspect is so meticulous in his operations that he is sure to create the need for periodic renewal of the certificates at a Sh6,000 fee.

The court granted custodial orders to hold the suspect until March 10, 2023, when the matter will be mentioned as police are still in pursuit of other accomplices of the suspect.

Ombogi will be charged with being in possession of implements of forgery and making documents without authority.

The DCI has also appealed to anyone who may have been a victim of Ombogi and his crooks to present their case at the DCI headquarters.
