The Meru University of Science and Technology, Tigania's main campus, has been closed indefinitely.

This comes after students from the university protested the removal of their Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo on Monday morning and engaged police officers from Ncheru Police in running battles.

In a memo, the institution’s senate asked all Meru University students to leave the university premises immediately.

"Arising from this unrest, the Senate resolved that the University be closed indefinitely, and all students must vacate all the university campuses with immediate effect," the memo read.

Apart from closing the institution, the senate has also suspended the university’s 10th graduation ceremony, which was slated for March 11, 2023, until further communication.

The protesting students took to Meru streets to demand the reinstatement of Odhiambo who was sent on terminal leave on Friday after the institution allegedly registered poor performance.

Apparently, Odhiambo was sent on terminal leave just four months ahead of the expiration of his term in July.

The students barricaded the Meru-Maua Road and brought business along the road and nearby markets to a standstill.

One motorist suffered the consequences of the demos after the students set a private car ablaze.
