President William Ruto has said his administration will double the National Youth Service (NYS) enrolment to 20,000 recruits per year.

Ruto said that on Friday during the 86th NYS recruits' passing out parade at the National Youth Service Paramilitary Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.

The president said that is a mechanism to build sufficient opportunities for the youth, especially those in rural areas.

According to Ruto, that will also allow the youth to explore their talents, energy and skills while contributing to the transformation of the country.

“We will double the National Youth Service enrollment to 20,000 a year as a mechanism of building sufficient opportunities to millions of the youth — especially those in rural areas — to explore their talents, energy and skills so as to make meaningful contribution to the transformation of our country,” Ruto said.

The president asked various ministries to create 30 per cent of the vacancies for NYS service recruits.

“Asked the Ministries of Defence, Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Tourism, Wildlife and Heritage, Interior and National Administration to allocate at least 30 per cent of their vacancies to NYS servicemen and women,” the president said.

Ruto also said NYS should offer equal chances to both men and women.
