Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is set to be arraigned in Nairobi to face a number of charges after he spent the night in police cells.

Sonko was questioned by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Services (DCI) on Monday for more than six hours over his conduct and recent controversial remarks.

He was grilled by DCI sleuths about seven cases of robbery with violence and five others related to assault in the recent years among many other issues.

DCI officers will seek more time to hold the former Nairobi County boss to question him further over utterances he made relating to the 2017 election violence among other cases.

He was last week summoned to appear before DCI Head of Serious Crime Unit Kuria Obadia on Monday over his claims that together with Interior PS Karanja Kibicho they took part in 2017 chaos.

Sonko was ordered to DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road after Kibicho recorded a statement clearing his name over Sonko’s allegations during a weekend rally in Dagoretti South, Nairobi.

Kibicho vowed to sue Sonko for libel over his claims that they bought ODM t-shirts and used cars which they torched along Ngong Road in 2017 for Raila Odinga’s party to be blamed for it.

The PS already obtained gag orders against the impeached governor barring him from continuing to drag his name by linking it to chaos by ODM party after the 2017 poll.

High Court Judge Msagha Mbogholi ruled that Kibicho’s reputation would be damaged some more if Sonko is not barred from making more false statements until the suit is determined.

Through his lawyer, Senior Counsel Fred Ngatia, Kibicho filed a case alleging the former Makadara MP uttered the false words on January 24 with the intent to damage his reputation.

“The libelous utterances against Dr Kibicho were not an isolated case but a continuation of sustained and systematic false, malicious and reckless statements the former governor has been making concerning the PS since 2017,” Ngatia said.
