Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome has denounced sanctioning a raid on the home of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s in Karen, Nairobi on Wednesday night.

According to Koome, no police officer had been sent to Matiang’i’s Nairobi home as alleged by Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and the former minister’s lawyer Danstan Omari.

In a report filed by Citizen Digital, the IG is denied any police involvement in the raid in which an unknown number of elite police officers allegedly surrounded Matiang’I’s home.

On Wednesday night, Omari had lamented that a contingent of police officers from an elite unit had been sent to apprehend the former CS, who was holed up in his Karen residence.

“My client is holed up as if he is a fugitive in his own country; This is a former in charge of security. This is a former minister in charge of the police. This is a minister who has served the citizens of this country. Civility must be retained,” said Omari on Wednesday night.

Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party leader Raila Odinga, who visited Matiang’I’s Karen home, criticized the said night raid saying the reasons for his arrest are unclear.

“And then he can even go and present himself to the police officer for interrogation and to record a statement. But this ideas of arresting senior citizens of this country at night is something that is completely repugnant to civilization; This is completely unacceptable in our society,” said Raila.
