Kenyans using the Madaraka Express passenger train service will soon not be allowed to purchase tickets in cash.

The Kenya Railways Corporation notified its customers and the public that it will no longer accept cash as a mode of payment when purchasing tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service stations.


The announcement of the changes that are expected to take effect on February 1, 2022, was made in a statement Kenya Railways shared on its social media accounts.

"We wish to notify our customers and the general public that effective 1st February, 2023, we will no longer be accepting cash for the purchase of tickets at all Madaraka Express Passenger Service stations," Kenya Railways said.

The corporation advised its customers to use other digital modes of payment such as M-Pesa and credit or debit cards at all their points of service.


"Customers are therefore advised to use M-pesa or debit/credit cards at all Point of Service," Kenya Railways added.
