In what could ignite a national debate, Anglican Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit has appealed to President William Ruto to hire more religious leaders to public institutions in the country.

According to Ole Sapit, the appointment of more people from the religious community into the key bodies will help “win public confidence” to the said government institutions.

The Anglican Archbishop was speaking to journalists on Wednesday when he officially opened a school in Kericho County.

He lauded Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati and commissioners Boya Molu and Abdi Guliye, whose terms ended on Tuesday.

Ole Sapit argued that Chebukati, Molu and Prof Guliye served Kenyans diligently and honoured the Constitution in the execution of their work during their six-year tenures.

“We know some of the IEBC commissioners’ terms ended. It is good to see that we are upholding the constitution and people are leaving office when their terms end,” he said.

He asked President Ruto to see to it that those who replace the trio are persons of integrity even as he pushed to have more religious leaders fill to restore public confidence in them.

“Even when we religious leaders are put such positions, Kenyans will have confidence that whoever has been put there is doing the work properly,” the archbishop stated.

This comes as the tenure of retired Anglican Archbishop Eliud Wabukala as EACC chairman ended on Tuesday after being appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta on January 18, 2017.

In the coming days, Wabukala’s tenure at the helm of the anti-corruption agency might be used to gauge performance of clergymen when given a chance to head public institutions.
