A man and his supposed lover drowned on Tuesday night after the vehicle they were spending time in drove and plunged into a dam at Titanic Area in Juja, Kiambu County.

Eyewitnesses say the two had been enjoying each other’s company in an X-Trail plate KCM 033C that had been parked a few meters from the popular park-and-chill spot for lovers.

However, they told reporters they later heard frantic screams from the female occupant as she attempted to swim at around 9:30pm after managing to escape from the plunged car.

The body of the unidentified woman was retrieved on Tuesday night while that of his male companion, who has been identified as Tirus Maina Gikonyo, 38, was found on Wednesday morning.

The body of the man was retrieved by divers while removing the vehicle from the dam with reports from the scene indicating that the two bodies were found without any clothes on.

The X-Trail was later towed to Mugutha Police Station as the bodies of the deceased were moved to General Kago mortuary in Thika as police try to piece together what transpired.

Eyewitnesses intimated to Swala Nyeti that the park-and-chill spot with a scenic view of the dam is popular with many revelers who come there to have a drink and have a “good time.”

A quick move around the scene close to the dam and one finds hundreds of scattered bottles of various brands of alcohol indicative of the kind of activities the venue hosts.

Murera Ward MCA Moses Ngatha Wabiri has vowed to move a motion in the Kiambu County Assembly to push county officers to fence all dams in the area to avert such deaths.

Consequently, Juja sub-county police commander Philis Muthoni has banned the public from the ‘Titanic’ dam precincts after 6pm in a move they believe will save many lives.

“We shall intensify police patrols in the area and ensure people do not stay there after dusk. We have collected many bodies of people who have drowned in that dam at night,” said Muthoni.

The notorious dam, which is situated along the Kimbo-Kiganjo Road less than 5km from the Thika superhighway, is reported to have claimed tens of lives ever since it was constructed.
