Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Friday got Kenyan talking after taking a one-hour trek facing Mt Kenya, a historically and religiously significant mountain among the Agikuyu.

Gachagua is attending the ongoing germinal retreat for members of the cabinet and other senior government officials being presided over by President William Ruto in Nyeri County.

An excited DP Gachagua narrated how he woke up early to take the “nostalgic” walk that he said reminded him of the freedom struggle ahead of Kenya attaining independence in 1963.

“H.E. President William Samoei Ruto and I arrived at the inaugural Retreat for Cabinet and Senior Ranks of the Executive at Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club at the foot of Mount Kenya last evening,” Gachagua said.

He added, “I woke up early this morning at 4am to make a nostalgic journey to The Mountain. The one hour trek that included crossing River Rikkia reminded me of the great struggle for our freedom.”

The DP narrated that he thanked God for looking over Kenyans since her independence.

“I took time to thank God for his Mercy and kindness to the people of Kenya and for giving us the freedom we are now enjoying,” he said.

He also revealed how he prayed to “Mwene Nyaga” to look after the Head of State as he takes measures to revive the Kenyan economy after ascending to power in the August poll.

“While facing Mount Kenya, I prayed to 'Mwene Nyaga' to give good health and wisdom to our Great Leader President William Samoei Ruto as he embarks on the economic transformation of our nation and the restoration of the dignity of the Kenyan people,” the DP stated.

He added, “Mlima is calm, steady and stoic na iko sawa.”

The trek by Gachagua comes in the face of his public beef with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja over his plans to relocate long distance drivers from the Central Business District.

The DP recently warned the Governor publicly against the move that he claimed targeted Mt Kenya businessmen, a move denied by Sakaja who vowed to go ahead and effect it.

The spat between the two Kenya Kwanza top leaders has seen Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga threaten to push for Sakaja’s ouster, a plan opposed by Western Kenya leaders.
