Embattled Meru Governor Karwira Mwangaza shed tears of joy after the Senate Committee saved her from imminent impeachment against her.

This comes after Meru MCAs impeached Kawira by 67 out of 69 on December 14, 2022, over gross misconduct and abuse of office claims.

The 11-member Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale-led committed dismissed all the five charges that were brought against Kawira.

Kawira was overwhelmed with emotions as Khalwale read out the verdict and wept.

“The committee having investigated the matter in accordance with its mandate under section 33(4) of the County Governments Act and standing order 80(2) of the Senate Standing Orders reports to the Senate that it finds that the five Charges against the Governor of Meru County have not been substantiated,” the report read.

This comes after Kawira who went before the committee to give her account on Tuesday denied all the charges and said she was being blackmailed.

Kawira becomes the first governor to have an impeachment motion moved against her only three months after taking office.
