Parliament is from Thursday set to start hearing a petition seeking to remove from office four dissenting commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

National Assembly Justice and Legal Affairs Committee will hold public hearings on the petitions filed against IEBC Vice Chair Juliana Cherera alongside commissioners Justus Nyang’aya, Irene Masit and Francis Wanderi.

The petitioners, in their petition before MPs, allege that the four committed serious violations of the Constitution and electoral laws, gross misconduct and incompetence.

The Justice and Legal Affairs committee will on Thursday consider a petition filed by the Republican Liberty Party and cross examine the petitioners over the claims against the four.

Immediately after the Republican Liberty Party the MPs in the committee will hear a petition filed by Rev Dennis Ndwiga Nthumbi followed later by his cross-examination.

On Friday, a petition filed by Geoffrey Langat will be heard before he is questioned on the grave issues he has raised in his petition against the besieged IEBC Comissioners.

This will be followed by a petition by Steve Owuor, who will also be grilled on his claims against the poll officials who disagreed with the IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati’s declaration of Dr William Ruto as president after the contested August 9 general election.


The MPs are set to receive responses to the petitions from Cherera and Masit on Monday before cross examining them, followed by a similar process for Wanderi and Nyang’aya slated for Tuesday next week.

The four commissioners walked out of Bomas of Kenya on August 15 as Chebukati announced the presidential results saying they would not take ownership of the results.

In a press conference they held moments later, Cherera, Masit, Nyang’aya and Wanderi said their walkout was due to the “opaque” manner in which the tallying process was conducted.

The four besieged commissioners were later rapped by Chebukati after the Supreme Court upheld Ruto’s win even as they were heckled at an IEBC retreat in Mombasa on September 19.
