The Government has through the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) launched a free Wi-Fi service at the Nairobi City Market.


While launching the free Wi-Fi, the new ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo said the service will enable traders to thrive in e-commerce.

“This free public Wi-Fi will offer traders a conducive environment for e-commerce to thrive,” Owalo said.

Owalo assured the traders in the market that the Wi-Fi will be strong enough to handle all their transactions within the market and a few metres beyond its environs.

He also said the service will allow users to access all online services while on the move without the inconvenience of running out of data.


The CS also disclosed that his ministry is intent on setting up about 25,000 free Wi-Fi hotspots countrywide in almost all public spaces, including airports, restaurants, libraries, public transport and many more.

This is in line with President William Ruto's promise to transform the country into a globally recognised digital economy.

"It is our vision to create a reliable and secure high-speed digital infrastructure for the public, as the avenue envisaged for Kenya’s digital transformation," Owalo said.

Also present during the launch of the free Wi-Fi service was the ICT Authority of Kenya Board of Directors chairperson Fredrick Owino.

Owino urged traders at the City Market to harness the opportunity and connect with other buyers and sellers on the globe.

“Now you have a chance to contact buyers and sellers in other parts of the world, right from the comfort of your phone,” Owino said.
