Japhet Koome may as well be on his way to becoming the next Inspector General of Police.
This is after the joint Parliamentary committee vetting him approved his nomination for the position to replace Hilary Mutyambai.
Mutyambai requested to proceed on terminal leave on the grounds of his health situation after taking medical leave on August 26, 2022.
President William Ruto announced Mutyambai’s resignation on September 27, 2022, during a press briefing at State House, Nairobi.
"This afternoon also, I have received communication from the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mutyambai of his request to proceed on terminal leave, because of his health situation," Ruto said.

"After discussing with Mr. Mutyambai and in consideration of his service to the nation and his health situation, I have accepted that Mr. Mutyambai will proceed on terminal leave in the six months that he has on his contract."
Ruto later nominated Koome to replace Mutyambai in the Inspector General’s position.
Koome is a former Nairobi County Police Commander and is the current Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo.
Currently, a debate is ongoing in parliament before the legislators vote on Koome’s approval.
